Grizzlies: Local Group Won't Buy Out Majority Owner By sportsbook-affiliates@mysportsbookonline.info
While an investment group planned to buy the Memphis Grizzlies, the local minority shareholders announced on Friday that they decided to give up their plans to match a $252 million offer to buy out majority owner Michael Heisley. The investment group led by Brian Davis, who is a real estate developer but was a former NBA player and co-captain of Duke's championship team in the early 1990s, reached an agreement with Heisley to sell his 70 percent of the franchise. According to the contract with Heisley, the minority shareholder had to set up a matching offer before Friday. The majority owner of the Memphis Grizzlies Heisley announced the proposed sale in October, claiming at that time to have reached an agreement with Davis to a $360 million as the total value of the franchise. Heisley possessed 70% of the team and the minority owners 30%. He bought the franchise in 2000 for $160 million in Vancouver. The potential buyer, Davis, leads an investment group that includes former NBA player Christian Laettner. The League is scheduled to rule out on his group's bid to buy out Heisley's share of the team in January. The sale will not take place unless the NBA gives his approval. Minority owner J.R. Hyde III, the founder of AutoZone Inc. and one of the city's top business
leaders, expects that the League will thoroughly check the proposed bid. In case of approval, minority owners are believed to accept the decision. Hyde was one of the key actors which brought the Grizzlies to Memphis in 2001. He explained that the major concern for the minority owners is to maintain the team in the city. Taxpayers already agreed to build a $250 million arena for the Grizzlies and agreements with local government prevent the franchise from leaving Memphis for at least 17 years. Grizzlies President Jerry West, one of the NBA's most respected executives, joined Memphis in 2002 transforming a team which was at the bottom rungs of the NBA to a winning team, reaching the league playoffs for the past three years. However this year, the Grizzlies are off to a 4-11 start mainly because of a large number of injuries.
