San Francisco 49ers Sign Lelie For Two Years

Ashley Lelie has just signed a two year contract with the Niners and this makes him the fourth major free agent to join the team during a four day signing frenzy that saw the Niners re-sign many of their own free agents.

2006 was a disappointing year of Lelie with Atlanta after he just caught 28 passes for 430 yards. Lelie was traded by the Broncos to Atlanta late in training camp last year. However, the 49ers did not seem to mind Lelie’s 2006 performance because they need a top receiver after they cut off Antonio Bryant.

Coach Mike Nolan believes that Lelie can regain the form he showed during the four good seasons he had with Denver when he had 3,003 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns. Lelie has received a second fresh start and he said that he chose the 49ers over Houston because the team offered him an opportunity to start and become the player to be contended with in the league.

The 49ers let go of Bryant after one chaotic season that started with Bryant receiving a huge signing bonus and ended with him getting suspended for four games for violating the NFL's policy on substance abuse.

Though

Lelie does not have a history of problems with coaches and law like Bryant, he has his fair share of controversy.

In 2006, Lelie did not attend Broncos' offseason workout program and then demanded to leave town because he felt that Denver was not utilizing his skills. Denver ended up trading him to the Falcons in a three way deal, but Lelie and the Broncos had to use an arbitrator to resolve a financial disagreement over his departure.

Lelie still is bitter about the way he left Denver but he also blames himself for not performing. He was also never comfortable in Atlanta because Michael Vick already had already forged a bond with the other Falcons' receivers.
